The Other Gold
Because my hands have always known
needle and thread
Because just sitting is beyond
the riot in my head
a creation
in some stage of completion
is often being cobbled
by my side.
I remember watching –
almost in a trance –
a chickadee sipping while sliding
down the length of an icicle
and doing this on repeat
while I was frozen
by the sight, all framed
by my window and the periwinkle blue
of winter sky.
But these meditative moments are few–
probably as numerous as a seahorse sighting,
or as my choosing mad red fabric.
These days, I knit.
The scarf is done when the
yarn runs out.
Then I pick a friend – either silver or gold –
and arrange the scarf around her
